Using the Brain

Posted on January 28, 2010 at 9:50 AM

One of my favorite authors once said "I like nonesense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living." It was Dr. Seuss.

No wonder I like this writer so much.

Fantasy does awaken the mind. What comes from the imagination CAN become reality ... and it does. If we just look at a few things that exist today that were once thought to be magical or impossible we can see what imagination can do.

Flying was something that man used to only dream of.

Computers only existed in Sci-fi movies.

Travel to space was nonsense.

The more I see of the world the more I believe in the power of imagination. The more I believe in fantasy.

Another favorite quote of mine is by John Lennon. He once said "I believe in everything until it is disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it is all in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?"

He's right you know. We shouldn't be so quick to think something does not exist simply because we have not seen it. Why would legends and myths persist from long ago until today if there was not some truth behind them?

Personally, I would hate to deny the existence of elves and fairies ... only to find out they are real. Angry pixies can be scary, I'd rather stay on their good side!

I like that Dr. Seuss quote. I'm not a big fan of his, but it's so true! As far as Lennon goes... well I'm not so sure about dragons but I sure know an elf or two out there that would be terribly upset if I told them they didn't exist. ;-)

Wonderful quotes by truly great artists. Let's face it, the world would be a pretty boring place if no kind of fantasy existed.

I think good writing makes the story become real to the reader. And that should be what we strive for. To give a readers a chance to step into the world we have created and to live there. How cool is that!

And Wolf...I'd not tell the local dragon I didn't believe in him if I were you.:-)

It's always neat to journey over to the Dr. Seuss Museum, which is about 10 minutes away from us. My kids love all his books. Imagine having his staying power, where we, our kids, and our grandkids will have read his work.

I love this post, especially the quotations. I'm also entrigued by the fact you write books with forest themes. Are they books for adults? I write for children and am finding the forest a great inspiration for my writing too.
